An (incomplete) flora and fauna list for Obi Obi Parklands

Species Relevant to the Maleny Community precinct

The following list is derived from personal observations (Les Hall - 2001 to 2010) and information obtained from reliable sources including staff from the Queensland Museum, Department of Natural Resources, National Parks and Wildlife (EPA), Forestry (Zoology), University of Queensland and Griffith University. Attention is also drawn to species listed in the Fauna Protection Act (1994) and in the Migratory Birds Act and the RAMSAR, CAMBA and JAMBA Agreements to which Australia is a signatory. Data on species from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was obtained from their current management plan.

A number of threatened species listed for Maleny on the Commonwealth EPBC data base (a 5k diameter EPBC search centred on Maleny) have not been included on the precinct list due to the absence of suitable habitat on the site.

Many of these species are found in suitable habitats nearby and would colonise the precinct area if suitable habitats were provided. Wetlands and rainforest feature on the list of habitats required by these species. Recovery plans for individual species should be consulted for more precise details of habitat requirements for threatened species.

The lack of an intensive fauna and flora survey of the area, taking into account seasonal effects, migration, cryptic species and rarity of species, could mean the absence of additional threatened species. This is particularly so for aquatic flora and fauna in Obi Obi Creek.

Threatened species:

Coxen's Fig Parrot.

Cyclopsitta diophthalma

29 threatened species of plants and animals occur or are highly likely to occur on the precinct site. The Commonwealth EBPC list for Maleny indicates that this present number of threatened species is conservative.
